Description
Detailed description
In addition to the flora and fauna of Schleswig-Holstein, the species-rich flora and fauna of the Lübeck region is also on display here on three floors. Understanding nature was already the concern of Lübeck doctor Johann Julius Walbaum, whose estate formed the basis for the Lübeck Natural History Museum in 1799. The museum can therefore look back on the longest museum history of all the museums in Lübeck. The fossil whale skeletons found near Groß Pampau, which are presented here, are unique in Europe.
One of the prominent exhibits is the skeleton of a sperm whale that stranded off the Danish island of Römö in December 1997. The huge 14-metre-long skeleton can be seen in the glass extension in the cathedral courtyard. The museum offers a wide range of educational activities, lectures, seminars, vacation programs, excursions and events. There are also special exhibitions on various current topics.
The museum also presents itself to the public through digital offerings
