Moin! The quaint fishermen's harbour in Travemünde with its maritime charm tempts you to relax, do some “ship watching” and stroll along the quayside. Here lie the steel deep sea vessels and small fishing boats, firmly tied up in the calm water and waiting patiently for their next catch in the early morning hours. If you feel like it, try a typically North German chinwag with the fishermen in the harbour. The best way to start your conversation is with a cheery “Moin” – whatever the time of day, that will work nearly every time.
Our tip: If you’re hungry, you can enjoy delectable food in one of the small fish restaurants, or try delicious smoked fish straight from the smokehouse. Or treat yourself to a tasty fish roll for a snack between meals. It’s best to eat it with your hands with matjes herring, mackerel or fried herring. What bliss!
At present, the old fishermen's harbour is undergoing a real makeover. A completely new harbour promenade for strolling is currently being created with restaurants, cafés and holiday apartments with a direct view of the big vessels tying up at the adjoining Scandinavia Quay. The new indoor fish market has already been completed. Feel free to drop in!
Every year, one of the largest covered sand sculpture exhibitions in Europe is held on the site of a boat shed in Travemünde’s fishermen's harbour. During the entire summer season and into autumn, you can admire around 15 works of art made of sand and at least one metre in height which have been created by sand artists from all over the world.
