Description
Detailed description
The three-nave brick hall church was built in 1334 and consecrated together with St. Marien and St. Petri. The box stalls and the historic organs have been preserved as the church was not damaged in World War II. The small "Stellwagen organ" is one of the best-preserved North German organs from the 16th century. The lifeboat in the northern tower chapel, which is now the"National Memorial to Civil Shipping", commemorates the sinking of the four-masted barque "Pamir" in 1957. As an international seafaring memorial, the church houses the urns of deceased persons whose lives were connected with seafaring in the vault under the Pamir Chapel as a columbarium (place of remembrance).
Further information on the history of the building.
In front of St. Jakobi is an ensemble of three-storey brick eaves houses from 1601, which served as homes for the pastors and preachers of St. Jakobi's Church.
