Relaxing beach life and historical resort tradition – you’d like to get to know Travemünde from all sides? In that case, just follow the route in our free Travemünde city map! On our tour, you can experience the resort at your very own pace. The beautiful beach villas forming part of the typical resort architecture, the diverse promenades and Travemünde’s Old Town tell the story of this seaside resort’s history to this day. One circuit of the promenades will take you around 1 to 1.5 hours without counting any time you spend viewing interiors. For an even greater experience of nature, you can simply extend your walk along the beach promenade until you reach the steep coast of Brodten, making a total of 3 to 3.5 hours. You can pick up the city map at our Tourist Information office right on the Trave promenade before starting your walk.
By the way: Here you will find our favourite photo spots in Travemünde for wonderful holiday snaps with plenty of tips on the right angles, best time of day and sample photos to inspire you.
Nordermole offers the perfect front row seat right by the sea. Where the Trave promenade meets the Beach promenade, you can step close to the water and find the best angle to capture the expanse of the Baltic Sea and the horizon in your photo: the rocks along the jetty in the foreground surrounded by huge swathes of water. The best pictures are taken in the evening hours when Nordermole is illuminated or in the gentle light of dawn. And with a little bit of luck, there will be a big ship just entering the Trave estuary.
Between Travemünde and Niendorf, you can stroll along the steep coast of Brodten and near Niendorf, you’ll come to the idyllic wooden steps leading down to the natural beach. Stand on the cliff-top and take your photo looking along the steps down to the beach and the Baltic Sea: ideally in the golden hour shortly before sunrise or sunset. In the morning hours, the steps are half in shadow, giving your photo a dynamic feel. But take care: The steps are slippery in the wet, walk on them at your own risk!
The DLRG lifeguard tower rises up right on the spa beach level with the Brügmann Gardens. This offers you a typical maritime motif for a photo, particularly in the high season from May to September when the tower is surrounded by dozens of roofed wicker beach chairs. The light is best early in the morning when the beach is still wonderfully empty, but the perfect backlight disappears as the sun climbs higher.
She’s Travemünde’s famous emblem: The four-masted Passat is moored on the Priwall peninsula and can be viewed here; and of course it offers a wonderful opportunity for a photo. Come to the Priwall promenade in the golden hour in the evening when it’s no longer in shadow, and you can photograph this impressive ship with its high masts front on. In the foreground, you will see the Fiete statue, the last sailor on the Passat, as a monument to all simple seamen.
St. Lorenz is the centrepiece of Travemünde’s Old Town. Quaint half-timbered houses and the brick façades of old gabled houses line the road on Alter Markt. Pure nostalgia! If you stand at Jahrmarktstraße No. 3-5, you’ll have a view of the church with its spire and the small houses surrounding it. The light is best here around midday.
Germany’s oldest lighthouse stands in Travemünde, totally worth seeing from the outside and the inside. If you kneel in front of the lighthouse, you’ll get a great view of the large anchor in the foreground with the whole tower in your viewfinder. From the 30 metre viewing gallery, you have a unique view of Scandinavia Quay, Travemünde’s Old Town, the redesigned Beach Bay around the Passat and over Lübeck Bay all the way to Grömitz and the coast of Mecklenburg.

Pure maritime charm awaits you here! Level with the yacht club right by the car park at Fishermen's harbour, you can turn along the quayside either towards Scandinavia Quay or towards Vorderreihe to the fishermen’s stalls. The light is perfect in the morning and you can buy your fresh fish right here.
You’ll find the perfect spot for a selfie on Kohlenhofspitze on Priwall: Here you can let your gaze wander over to Vorderreihe opposite and frame yourself against this dream resort backdrop. The light is best in the late afternoon with the sun on the opposite bank.
Our tip: Use the two ferries to take you over and take a stroll along both promenades. Only in Travemünde.
A wonderful experience of nature awaits you, above all in the southern part of Priwall. Time and again, you’ll find great spots for photos with a view of the water all along the idyllic Holzbuhlenweg in the nature conservation area and on Pötenitzer Wiek. The coastal flora is at its best in the autumn.
