The steep coast of Brodten is a wonderful location for a relaxed bike tour with a view of the sea. Large sections of the approx. 4.5 kilometre steep coast are subject to a conservation order. At the top of the steep coast of Brodten, a comfortable footpath and cycle trail leads from Travemünde to Niendorf. Below this coastal path, a hiking trail runs right along the beach, but this one is very wild, stony and abandoned to nature. The easily navigable coastal path forms part of the Baltic Sea Coastal Cycle Trail (EV10) and as an OstseeSterne Tour it is ideally suited for beginners and relaxing excursions in the countryside – always with the water beside you.
You start your bike trip at the Kowitzberg car park or the Möwenstein car park in Travemünde. After just a few minutes, the steep coast of Brodten lies below you In some places, the cliffs are up to 20 metres high. Initially, you cycle past a green forming part of the Lübeck-Travemünder Golf Club, then on past meadows and fields and through numerous shady, wooded sections. Small resting areas and benches along the way invite you to linger and savour the fresh Baltic Sea breeze. At around the half way mark, you reach the idyllically situated adventure café Hermannshöhe which offers a wonderful view of the Baltic Sea from its terrace. You continue past the Seeblick youth centre which is now perilously close to the crumbling cliff edge. Nature is taking its toll here as every year, the Baltic Sea wind and waves dig deeper into the cliff, eating away up to a metre. So be careful! Please do not stray from the marked path and do not get too close to the edge. After a short ride, about one kilometre from Niendorf, you will reach the only steps leading down directly to the beach. Feel free to take a break here and climb down to look for petrified thunderstones on the natural beach and to be close to the sea. Continue on the coastal path until you reach the Baltic Sea resort of Niendorf. It’s worthwhile visiting the pier and Niendorf harbour before returning to Travemünde. Off you go!
The signposted EuroVelo Route EV10, also called the Baltic Sea Coastal Cycle Trail or Hansa Route, is a European long-distance cycle trail. It leads for roughly 8,000 kilometres through Denmark, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Finland and Sweden and once all the way round the Baltic Sea. On the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein alone, you can follow it for 430 kilometres from Flensburg via Glücksburg, Kiel and Fehmarn to Travemünde. The coastal path on the steep coast of Brodten from Travemünde to Niendorf contributes a stretch of around 4.5 km to the Baltic Sea Coastal Cycle Trail. Not bad!
